How Heartburn Manifests

Heartburn, despite its name, has almost nothing to do with the heart. It was given this name, because of the proximity in the body where the feeling of pain / discomfort is felt. Often, for people experiencing the symptoms for the first time, they are falsely lead to believe that they have a problem with their heart - and hence need immediate medical attention. This is simply not the case.

The real cause of the discomfort actually comes from the stomach. Because the stomach is located in very close proximity to the heart, the symptoms are said to feel like they are actually coming from the heart, rather than from the stomach.

Regardless, the feeling of heartburn can best be described as an "uncomfortable" one, which is most obvious when you swallow. Unfortunately, because the acid from the stomach is under pressure, when you swallow, the opening to the stomach lets some of that acid come back in to the esophagus, and hence then burning sensation felt.

Most people will say that they feel heartburn is much more "uncomfortable" than it is painful. Indeed, a number of people say that heartburn does create major pains, however most will simply agree that the discomfort is the feeling which causes the most grief.

So, next time you develop such a symptom - try investigating whether or not it is the heart, or simply the stomach which is causing the problems.
