How Traditional Heartburn Treatments Work
In order to fully understand how traditional treatments for heartburn and acid reflux work, it makes sense to actually understand what causes the two issues in the first place. More often than not, people who experience heartburn are actually suffering from a problem with the digestive tract. This means - as you will soon find out - that heartburn has nothing to do with the heart, except for feeling like it is coming from the same place of the body.
Here is an explanation of why people experience the symptoms of heartburn. Having read all of this information, you will also be able to understand why it is the case that heartburn and acid reflux manifest themselves only after consumption of a meal or a drink.
Once we finish explaining the actual issue, we will go on to find out how the traditional treatments work to combat the feeling of discomfort and pain caused by the two medical phenomena.
How Heartburn Occurs
When we eat food, we very rarely chew each mouthful for the recommended 30 times. Most people - as found in a recent survey - will only chew about 10 times before swallowing. This alone is not the cause of heartburn, but it certainly does contribute. Once this relatively "un-broken-down" food enters the stomach, this part of the body has a tougher time digesting and breaking the food down in to liquid form.
It may be the case - if you have had something particularly durable to eat for dinner - that the stomach takes a lot longer than usual to process everything in to liquid form. When this happens, acid build up in the stomach, because it thinks that there is not enough processing power in there to break down the food. All in all, this results in an excess amount of acid in the stomach.
For one reason or another, this excess acid sometimes finds its way into the lower part of our esophagus - which does not have the same protection as the stomach. Therefore, we feel a burning sensation - because the acid is indeed eating in to the lining of the digestive tract.
A Simple Fix
Acid is combated by alkaline. Therefore, by simply applying an alkaline substance to the affected lining of the digestive tract, the feeling of discomfort is removed. This is how the traditional pill and liquid heartburn treatments work.
